Dimitra Temple

Sagri (11 Km from Naxos Town) with its ancient monuments, Byzantine Churches, Venetian castles is one of the interesting places in Naxos Island. The plethora of old Byzantine churches and Monasteries in the area are reminiscent of the famous Byzantine area of Mystra. The village itself with the beautiful island houses, quaint cobblestone alleys’s old churches and monasteries, amazing windmills and above all its hospitable inhabitants, gathers the interests of both local sand visitors to the area.

Naxos Car RentalsThe Monastery of Agios Elefterios in Sagri, that operated as a school during the Turkish occupation and Palaiologos Tower since 17th century in Sagri Valley with the chapel of Virgin of the Tower next to it are both worth a visit. The church of Agios Artemios in Sagri valley opposite the Holly Cross was built during the Iconoclastic period (8th – 9th century). It is a simple single spaced, domed church which was built the 9th century. The Monastery of Holy Cross or Vazaios Tower since 17th century on the way to Agiassos is another indication of the importance of the area.

In Sagri area on the way to Agiassos, Kaloritsa Virgin or Spiliotissa Virgin with two layers of frescoes since 17th century, is a cave converted into a church (first two pictures on the left). Belonia Tower in Galanado since 16th century. Right next to the tower, the both Orthodox and Catholic chapel. The Temple of Demetra (picture on the right) dating back to 530 BC.

In Sagri area are the remains of the ancient temple dedicated to goddess Dimitra (main picture above).

Agia Anna is one of the most beautiful areas in Naxos Island, reputed for its fine sandy beach. It makes an excellent resort and it is ideal for visitors who love beach holidays.

It is a lovely resort that attracts plenty of visitors every year. Once a fishing village, today a popular resort with golden sand and plenty of beach restauranrs, taverns and clubs.

There is a small port in Agia Anna where organized cruises depart to remote beaches. Horse riding, car and motoribike rentals, travel agencies and cash point machines are also available in Agia Anna.

Naxos Town on the west coast is the island’s port and capital and it is the arrival point for all but air visitors. The town officially called Naxos, most books and residents call it Hora. The town feels like four towns joined together: the port with the waterfront, the Old Town with the Venetian Castle (Kastro), Saint George with the so named beach.
